Led Zeppelin: Not a "singles band"

We've all heard this many times....the singles they released were few and far between.

Why were certain songs selected for single release (like The Immigrant Song and Fool in the Rain) while others that could have been bigger hits were passed over (Stairway..., All My Love). Was this a band or label decision?

Dac wise, how bout going back to the beginning?

Like a CD player from 1985\86\87 utilizing a Burr Brown true 16 bit Ladder Dac with Yamaha dip.
I just put one in the system tonight, I’m not going to tell you what deck it is cause you’d laugh, but the laugh is on us because the thing sounds damned good and......analog!

Musicians who have stayed 'in character' their whole careers

The Dylan thread got me thinking about other musicians who have a 'character' or 'persona' that seems to never have been pierced to look behind. Some musicians have a certain persona -- but that just seems to be who they are. Others very clearly go through life in costume -- and never publicly take it off. That's what interests me.

Tom Waits seems a clear one to me. Who is the 'real' Tom Waits? Tough call....

Who else comes to mind for you?

Your most recent system tweak, did it help or hurt the sound?

I was curious as to what degrees other forum members tweak/obsess/nitpick over their system?

This is not an all encompassing list but I consider a tweak (right or wrong) to be calibrating your TT, moving components or seating around, room treatments, power conditioning or outlets, vibration control, racks, etc.

I don’t think a tweak is new speakers, amps, cartridge, source, or any other large box purchase. Those are larger than tweaks and there are other threads to share those purchases...

1969 was 50 years ago...

Hard to believe. All these current and impending 50th Anniversary box sets won't let us forget. These music sets (and the copyright ramifications that go with them) have made musical 50ths a bigger deal than 5-0's in many other fields - besides the weddings and birthdays category. I was a baby then and couldn't see or hear much beyond the crib, but I would like to believe that the place I grew up in in the USA stayed sort of '1969-ish' until about 1974-75...

which album, since the beginning of time, has been the biggest disappointment for you.

i mean you couldn't wait til it got released, you ran out on bought it the first day, you rushed home, tore off the shrink wrap (or opened the long box for you youngsters) took the phone off the hook, got a beverage or an ashtray, and sat down to listen, uninterrupted.

and.......boom......it was terrible.......you couldn't believe just how bad it was. so disappointed.....(maybe the next song will be...

What's a record that you know exists but you've never been able to find?

I'm currently on a bit of a treasure hunt. I've been looking for a copy of the album "Puzzle" by Dada on vinyl. I know at least one exists and was sold on ebay within the past few years, but have no idea how many were made/if any more are out there.

I'm sure many of you have had similar experiences.

My first impression, and lasting impression, mediocre. I think they were the prototype female rock band and so were lauded by the label. When I heard Cherry Bomb I was underwhelmed.

Chet Baker: Chet is Back Org Music reissue

The Org Music Chet is Back reissue (Bernie Grundman) sounds fantastic. The quality of this reissue is top notch. I snagged it for $24 from MD and glad I did. There is a 45 rpm version, I just went for the 33 due to the price.

For a mono recording there is quite a bit of depth and a sense where the musicians are. The speakers basically disappear.

I nominate Little House On The Prairie.

A soap opera without sex, and a western without action.

The worst of both worlds.

Tons of infos spreaded out in dozens of threads in this forum, I know, but I would like to bring everything together in one place, if possible, especially for those who, like me, love to have the original inner in each LP, because we consider it as a significant part of its history.
I would like to try, with the help of many collectors and experts present here, to identify as precisely as possible the exact inner present into the album at the first release day.
As you all know, over the...

30-disc studio & live box coming from Gentle Giant

Was reading MOJO or one of the other British rock magazines, can't recall which, today at Barnes & Noble and there was a short interview with Derek Shulman. He talked a little about the new Three Pieces Suite. Said Interview was up next for Steven Wilson treatment. Said Gentle Giant would never reform, but added that next year there will be a 20-CD Gentle Giant box set of all live performances. Should be interesting.

Also said Elton John was thisclose to joining the band at one point, then...

Hello there,

This Christmas my family and I will be visiting New York. Really looking forward to this! Beside the tourist-must-go-spots, I would like to browse in some record stores. In the thread about the New York Meetup, there were soms shops mentioned, but also that some of them are already closed.
My question; what stores are left in Manhattan? Which would be interesting for someone with a taste for progrock and Beatles? We stay in a hotel near Times Square, so in that neighbourhood...

I don't know about you guys, but there were some awesome gifts waiting under the tree for me this morning. Best part about it, besides that my wife is awesome, is that they are all based on Forum threads.

The bounty:

Paranoid - Black Sabbath (Pearce remaster)
